The suitcase is packed, the tickets are ready, and you're already dreaming of your first morning away. But before you lock the door, is your home ready for a little vacation of its own?
Unlike Kevin in Home Alone, your house probably won't be setting clever traps for unexpected visitors. But a few simple preparations can help keep everything running smoothly while you're away.
Here's a handy checklist before you say goodbye!
1. Lock Up & Check Your Security
Make sure doors, windows, garages and sheds are securely locked. Check outdoor lighting, security cameras and alarm systems, and consider setting timers for indoor lights.
Smart cameras are helpful, but remember, they can't pick up a package left on your doorstep!
2. Give Your Insurance a Quick Look
Some home insurance policies have specific requirements when a property is left unoccupied, especially for extended trips.
It's worth checking with your insurer whether regular home visits or other precautions are needed while you're away.
A quick check before travelling can save a lot of questions later.
3. Keep Water Where It Belongs
A small unnoticed leak can turn into an unwelcome surprise.
Check under sinks, around toilets and near appliances for signs of moisture. Make sure taps are off, and consider turning off the main water supply if appropriate for your home.
During colder months, keep your heating at a suitable temperature to help protect your pipes.
4. Prepare for Whatever the Weather Brings
Here on the Saanich Peninsula, autumn and winter can bring their share of wind, rain and occasionally snow.
Secure patio furniture, clear leaves from accessible outdoor drains and make sure gutters and downspouts are in good condition.
A little preparation now can help avoid surprises after a storm.
5. Empty the Fridge (Before It Starts Growing Things!)
Before leaving, check your fridge for leftovers, fresh produce and anything likely to spoil before you return.
Take out the kitchen garbage, too.
After all, nobody wants to come home to a mould colony celebrating in the fridge!
6. Don't Forget the Mail, Plants & Raccoons
Arrange for someone to collect your mail and packages so your mailbox doesn't announce that you're away.
Give your plants a good drink and arrange watering if needed. Your plants may miss you, but they don't need to look the part!
And make sure your garbage bins are emptied and secured.
The neighbourhood raccoons may be disappointed to discover you've cancelled their all-you-can-eat buffet.
7. Have Someone Check In
Even with smart technology, there's comfort in knowing a trusted person can physically check your home.
Regular visits can help spot visible leaks, storm damage, security concerns or other little surprises before your return.
